Five Princes Nominated for Awujale Throne, Names Forwarded to Abiodun
Five princes have been nominated by the Ilamuren Kingmakers Council to succeed the late Awujale of Ijebuland, with their names submitted to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Five princes have been nominated to fill the vacant throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland, with their names forwarded to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for final consideration.
The nomination was made by the Council of Ilamuren Kingmakers, led by the Olisa of Ijebuland, Chief Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya.
In a letter addressed to Governor Abiodun and personally signed by Adesanya, the kingmakers stated that the selection process was carried out in line with Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law 1957 and the Customary Law guiding the succession of the Awujale of Ijebuland Chieftaincy.
The five nominees listed in the letter are Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye, Prince Isiaq Ayodele Adewale Adekoya (Eleruja), Prince Onabanjo Abimbola John, Prince Oluwaseun Waheed Omopenu Onanuga, and Prince Olabode Onanuga.
Adesanya explained that several meetings were held by the Ilamuren-in-Council to deliberate on suitable candidates for the revered traditional institution.
According to the letter, the relevant declaration provides that the kingmakers may unanimously select one candidate or forward preferred names to the state government for the final decision.
“The Declaration provides that all the kingmakers must unanimously pick one candidate or send preferred candidates of the kingmakers to the State Government for final choice. It is in pursuance of that we forward the five names for the choice of the State Government,” the letter stated.
The Olisa noted that the recommendations were made after considering the interests of Ijebu-Ode, the requirements of Ogun State chieftaincy laws and the need to ensure that a qualified person emerges as the next Awujale.
He expressed confidence that the nominated princes possessed the experience and background required to lead Ijebuland and contribute to the development of the community, Ogun State and Nigeria.
The Awujale throne became vacant following the passing of the former monarch, creating a succession process involving the traditional kingmakers and the state government.
The final selection of the next Awujale will be determined through the established traditional and legal procedures governing the revered Ijebuland chieftaincy.
