Oluwafemiayo Breaks World Record as Nigeria Dominates Commonwealth Games Opening Day

Nigeria's Para Powerlifting captain, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, delivered a sensational performance by breaking the world record to win gold on the opening day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The reigning Paralympic champion lifted 167kg in the women's heavyweight category, surpassing her own previous world record of 166kg and reaffirming her status as one of the sport's greatest athletes.

Oluwafemiayo's record-breaking lift capped a dominant day for Team Nigeria, which finished with an impressive haul of three gold medals and two silver medals in para powerlifting. Earlier, Esther Nworgu claimed gold in the women's lightweight event with a Games record, while Donatus Ebere also secured gold in the men's heavyweight category. Esther Oyema and Roland Ezuruike added silver medals to complete Nigeria's outstanding medal tally.

In recognition of their achievements, the National Sports Commission (NSC) rewarded the medallists with cash incentives under its performance reward programme. Oluwafemiayo received an additional bonus for setting a new world record, while the NSC praised the athletes for flying Nigeria's flag proudly on the international stage.

The impressive start has strengthened Nigeria's bid for a successful Commonwealth Games campaign, with officials expressing confidence that Team Nigeria can build on its momentum as more events get underway in Glasgow.
