Okowa Visits EFCC Lagos Office Amid Ongoing Financial Probe

Former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial activities during his tenure.

Sources within the anti-graft agency disclosed that the visit was connected to the commission’s continued probe into issues surrounding Okowa’s eight-year administration as governor of Delta State.

Okowa, who governed Delta State between 2015 and 2023 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had previously been arrested by the EFCC in November 2024 over allegations of financial misconduct.

The former governor was accused of diverting about N1.3 trillion during his administration and allegedly using public funds to acquire properties in Asaba, the Delta State capital, and Abuja.

The allegations formed part of an investigation by the commission into financial transactions carried out during his time in office.

However, Okowa has consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting that public funds under his administration were properly managed.

Following his earlier arrest, the former governor said he was not afraid of investigation and accused some individuals of subjecting him to media trial.

“I am not worried, and I have spoken about it. I am not afraid to be investigated,” Okowa said.

He maintained that his administration operated within available resources to provide services for residents of Delta State.

“I may not be a saint, but I know I stepped in there as governor with a full hope and desire to help people,” he added.

Okowa later became the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 general election, running alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In April 2025, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his successor, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and other political stakeholders in the state.

The EFCC has continued to investigate several former public officials over alleged financial infractions, with the agency maintaining that its actions are aimed at promoting accountability and transparency in public service.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement regarding Okowa’s latest visit to its Lagos office or provided details of the engagement.
