Obi Emerges NDC’s Sole Presidential Aspirant
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential ticket, with indications that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the only aspirant who purchased the forms.
Party sources disclosed that Obi, who recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC, emerged as the sole contender at the close of the sales process, positioning him as the likely consensus presidential candidate of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued by the NDC National Secretary, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party announced an extension of the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for other elective positions.
According to the statement, the deadline, earlier scheduled to end at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, has now been extended to 12 midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The extension affects aspirants contesting for governorship seats, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly positions.
However, the party confirmed that the collection of presidential forms has officially closed.
The NDC timetable further revealed that screening of aspirants who purchased and completed the forms will begin on Tuesday, May 19, and end on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
The collection and return of Nomination Forms for aspirants cleared through the screening process will commence on May 20 and close on May 26.
The party warned that no additional extension would be granted and urged all aspirants to strictly comply with its guidelines and timelines.
According to the NDC, all aspirants are expected to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues nationwide with required documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or declarations of age, passport photographs, voter’s cards, party membership cards, and curriculum vitae.
The party added that screening would be based on factors such as competence, character, local realities, and the wishes of the electorate.
It also directed the screening committee to consider its affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities.
With Obi standing as the sole presidential aspirant, political observers believe the former Anambra governor is set to emerge as the NDC’s presidential flag bearer for the 2027 general election.
