NSCDC Arrests Suspects in Edo Over Theft and Vandalism of Telecom Mast Facilities
The Edo State Command of the NSCDC has arrested a suspect for stealing diesel from an MTN telecommunications mast in Utesi while successfully securing a two-year prison sentence for two other infrastructure vandals operating in Okpella.
The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested suspects in connection with the deliberate vandalism and theft of critical telecommunications infrastructure. The enforcement operation is part of an intensified state-wide crackdown aimed at safeguarding essential national assets and cutting off the black-market supply chains driving public utility theft.
The targeted arrests occurred following intelligence-led operations designed to secure high-value communication facilities. In a prominent breakthrough, security operatives apprehended a suspect, identified as Esosa Godsent Osagie, for the targeted theft of roughly 60 liters of diesel from an MTN telecommunications mast facility in the Utesi community. The operation was executed by the Command's specialized surveillance teams acting on credible localized intelligence, in close operational synergy with local vigilante personnel who had reported repeated structural breaches and automated equipment sabotage at the facility.
Judicial Backing and Inter-Agency Enforcement
The recent arrests coincide with a major judicial victory for the Edo Command, led by Commandant Saidi Akintayo Ayinla. The NSCDC successfully secured the conviction of two separate infrastructure vandals who were caught sabotaging public assets in the Okpella axis of the Etsako East Local Government Area. The two convicted individuals were sentenced to two years of imprisonment each by a competent court, while three other co-conspirators remain in judicial custody awaiting final trial.
The state command has re-emphasized that telecommunications facilities, power transformers, and underground fiber-optic cables are classified as critical national infrastructure under federal law. Consequently, the agency has expanded its night patrols and community-watch frameworks across the state's three senatorial districts to decisively deter economic saboteurs, warning that all individuals caught compromising public utilities will face swift criminal prosecution.
