NLC Condemns Alleged DSS Maltreatment of Sowore
The Nigeria Labour Congress has criticised the DSS over the alleged mistreatment of Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court, urging the agency to respect due process, act professionally and remain within its constitutional responsibilities.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticised the Department of State Services (DSS) over the alleged intimidation and mistreatment of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore during proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the labour union described the conduct of the security operatives as unnecessary and unbecoming of an agency expected to uphold professionalism. The NLC said the manner in which Sowore was taken into custody created an avoidable scene and undermined public confidence in the country's justice system.
The congress questioned the DSS's role in the matter, arguing that criminal prosecutions are the responsibility of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice. It maintained that security agencies should operate within their constitutional mandate and avoid actions that could give the impression of bias or overreach.
The NLC further stressed that democratic institutions should remain independent and guided by the rule of law rather than the interests of individuals or political office holders. It warned that weakening public institutions in favour of powerful personalities could pose a threat to Nigeria's democracy.
The labour body called on the DSS to uphold professionalism and ensure that the rights of all citizens are respected, regardless of the allegations against them. It added that adherence to due process and respect for court proceedings are essential for maintaining public trust in state institutions.
The incident has continued to generate reactions from civil society groups and other stakeholders, with renewed calls for accountability and respect for the rule of law in the handling of high-profile cases.
