NIPOST Moves to Assign Digital Postcodes to Every Building in Nigeria

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced plans to introduce a National Digital Postcode System that will provide a unique digital address for every identifiable building across Nigeria.

The initiative is aimed at creating a standardised and technology-driven location framework that will improve the accuracy of addressing systems, logistics operations, emergency response and national planning.

Speaking during the unveiling of the Post Code Delineation Model Validation 2026 in Abuja, NIPOST Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi, said the project would establish a machine-readable location system for buildings nationwide.

Odeyemi explained that the postcode system would enable every addressable structure in Nigeria to have a unique code, placing the country among the few African nations developing a unit-level digital addressing framework.

“Postcode is basically a framework used to have a machine-readable standard location address for every addressable building in Nigeria,” she said.

According to her, the system would address longstanding challenges associated with poor location identification, which have affected postal delivery, commercial activities, emergency operations and government planning.

She noted that Nigeria’s geographical diversity required a carefully designed approach to postcode allocation, as different regions have varying population densities, landscapes and settlement patterns.

Odeyemi explained that the addressing model for northern states with sparse settlements would differ from that of densely populated urban areas such as Lagos.

She said the delineation process was being developed to ensure that postcode boundaries align with existing administrative structures and do not cross local government boundaries.

“The logic that will work for Jigawa is not the same logic that will work for Bayelsa because they have completely different geographical expressions, density of buildings, population distribution, and topography,” she stated.

The NIPOST chief executive added that the validation exercise involved comparing digitally created postcode maps with actual settlements to ensure accuracy.

She said aerial mapping data was being tested against real-world conditions, including building density and topographical features across different parts of the country.

Odeyemi described the validation stage as a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation efforts, stressing that the project would provide a reliable addressing structure for individuals, businesses and public institutions.

Nigeria has historically faced difficulties caused by inadequate addressing systems, affecting delivery services, emergency management and data-based planning.

The National Digital Postcode System is expected to provide a modern solution by creating a unified location identification framework capable of supporting economic activities and improved public services nationwide.
