Nigeria-US Forces Eliminate Over 20 ISWAP Fighters in Borno Airstrikes
Defence Headquarters Nigeria has confirmed that Nigerian troops, in collaboration with United States Africa Command, carried out coordinated airstrikes that eliminated more than 20 fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province in Borno State.
The operation took place in the Metele area of North-East Nigeria following intelligence reports indicating the convergence and movement of terrorist elements in the region.
According to the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, the strikes were part of ongoing joint operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and denying insurgents safe havens across the country.
He explained that the coordinated assault was triggered by observed movement of ISWAP fighters, leading to multiple precision airstrikes that successfully neutralised the targets.
The Defence Headquarters stated that the mission reflects intensified efforts by Nigerian forces, working alongside international partners, to disrupt insurgent activities and prevent regrouping of terrorist cells in the North-East.
Military authorities further assured that operations would continue with increased intensity, stressing that no terrorist group would be allowed to operate freely within Nigeria’s territory.
Maj. Gen. Uba reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting civilians and safeguarding national security, adding that troops would sustain aggressive operations against extremist groups.
He stated that the Armed Forces remain determined to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensure lasting peace in affected regions, particularly in areas long affected by insurgency.
The statement also referenced recent counterterrorism successes involving joint operations with international allies, underscoring growing cooperation in the fight against terrorism in West Africa.
Security analysts note that the latest strikes form part of a broader campaign aimed at weakening ISWAP’s operational capacity and disrupting its leadership and logistics networks.
Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to continue supporting security agencies with timely intelligence to aid ongoing military operations.
