Nigeria's Para Powerlifting Team Earns ₦27.5m After Commonwealth Games Medal Haul

Nigeria's para powerlifting team has received $18,000 (about ₦27.5 million) in performance rewards after an impressive medal-winning start at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The National Sports Commission (NSC) presented the cash rewards to the athletes following their outstanding performances on the opening day of competition.

Esther Nworgu claimed Nigeria's first gold medal of the Games after producing a Games record-breaking performance of 119.0 points in the women's lightweight event. She finished ahead of compatriot Esther Oyema, who won silver with 115.5 points, while England's Olivia Broome took bronze. Nworgu received $8,000 in rewards, comprising $3,000 for winning gold and an additional $5,000 performance bonus.

Nigeria also secured a silver medal through veteran para powerlifter Roland Ezuruike in the men's lightweight category. Ezuruike narrowly missed gold after failing his final lift, allowing England's Mark Swan to win on a tiebreak despite both athletes finishing with the same points. The Nigerian star received a $5,000 reward from the NSC for his achievement.

The three medallists earned a combined $18,000 (approximately ₦27.5 million), reinforcing Nigeria's long-standing dominance in para powerlifting at major international competitions. The strong start has boosted Team Nigeria's medal hopes as the Commonwealth Games continue in Glasgow.
