Nigeria, Benin Deepen Cross-Border Security, Trade Cooperation

National Boundary Commission and officials from Benin have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cross-border cooperation, improving regional security and boosting trade relations across West Africa.

The Director-General of Nigeria’s National Boundary Commission, Adamu Adaji, stressed the importance of proper border demarcation in promoting peace, economic growth and improved living conditions for border communities.

Represented by the Head of Cross Border Cooperation, Dr. Farouk Tarfa, Adaji spoke during a two-day Cross Border Cooperation Programme held along the Nigeria-Benin and Benin-Togo borders on May 14 and 15, 2026.

The programme was coordinated by the Director-General of Benin’s National Boundary Commission, Yousouf Adams.

According to Adaji, clearly defined borders are essential for regional stability, community resilience and enhanced cooperation among neighbouring countries.

He noted that many African borders inherited during the colonial era remained poorly defined at independence, but African leaders had since worked towards peaceful coexistence and regional integration through diplomacy and dialogue.

Adaji also appealed for continued support from German International Cooperation towards completing the demarcation of the Nigeria-Benin international boundary, saying the project would strengthen security, expand trade opportunities and improve livelihoods in border communities.

The programme attracted officials from several regional and international organisations, including representatives of the African Union and ECOWAS.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Adams said border governance in West Africa was undergoing major transformation driven by efforts to improve security, cooperation and economic integration.

Delegates also visited border pillars and inspected socio-economic projects in border communities. They later paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Iwoye-Ketou, His Royal Majesty Sir Isaac, who commended ongoing efforts aimed at promoting peace and development across border regions.

German International Cooperation representative, Tobias Thiel, reaffirmed support for improving border governance across Africa, describing borders as important tools for promoting peace, trade and sustainable development.

Officials said the inauguration of Local Cross Border Cooperation Platforms between Nigeria, Benin and Togo would further strengthen security, regional trade and community integration across West Africa.
