Newcastle Determined to Keep Guimarães Amid Arsenal Interest

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has reaffirmed the club’s determination to keep captain Bruno Guimarães, amid renewed speculation linking the Brazilian midfielder with a move to Arsenal.

Reports earlier this week suggested Arsenal are preparing a £70 million offer for the 28-year-old as they continue efforts to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new Premier League season.

Despite the transfer rumours, Howe insisted Newcastle’s position remains unchanged, stressing that Guimarães remains a vital part of the club’s plans.

The Newcastle boss spoke after his side’s 1-1 pre-season draw against Gateshead on Saturday.

According to the BBC, Howe revealed he has maintained regular communication with the Brazil international and described their discussions as positive, although he admitted that football transfers can sometimes be unpredictable.

“You’ve got to look at it in its own right,” Howe said.

“Bruno is the captain of our football club. He’s been an unbelievable player and person all through the time we have worked together.”

The Newcastle manager praised Guimarães for his leadership qualities and contributions both on and off the pitch since joining the Magpies.

He added that everyone connected with the club hopes the midfielder remains at St James’ Park.

“I speak on behalf of everyone at the football club. We absolutely love him and, of course, everyone will want him to stay,” Howe added.

Guimarães has established himself as one of Newcastle’s most influential players since arriving from French club Lyon in January 2022.

His performances have helped Newcastle secure European qualification in recent seasons, while his leadership qualities earned him the captain’s armband.

The midfielder has also become a regular member of Brazil’s national team, increasing interest from several top European clubs.

Arsenal have been linked with multiple midfield targets this summer as manager Mikel Arteta seeks to strengthen his squad for another Premier League title challenge.

However, Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell Guimarães and are expected to resist offers unless presented with an exceptional bid.

With the new season approaching, Howe remains focused on preparing his squad while hoping to retain the services of one of his most important players.

Whether Arsenal pursue their reported interest further could become one of the major transfer stories in the closing weeks of the summer transfer window.
