The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the seizure of illicit drugs valued at N1.5 trillion in the past 18 months, marking a major milestone in the country's ongoing war against drug abuse and trafficking.

The agency disclosed that the massive haul was recorded through coordinated operations across various parts of the country, including the interception of consignments at airports, seaports, land borders, drug joints, and through targeted raids on the hideouts of suspected drug barons.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), reportedly disclosed the figures while highlighting the agency's renewed efforts and strategies in tackling the drug menace in the country.

According to the agency, the seizures cover a wide range of illicit substances, including cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, tramadol, codeine-based syrups, and a range of psychotropic substances commonly abused across the country.

The NDLEA also reported the arrest of thousands of suspected drug traffickers, dealers, and users during the period under review, as well as the prosecution and conviction of several offenders in line with the country's drug laws.

The agency further revealed that it had rescued and counselled a large number of drug addicts during the period, with many of them undergoing rehabilitation and reintegration programmes aimed at restoring them to productive members of society.

Marwa attributed the achievements to the renewed political will of the Federal Government, increased operational support, improved intelligence gathering, and the dedication of officers and men of the agency across the country.

He also commended the cooperation of international partners, including drug control agencies in other countries, security organisations, and members of the public who have continued to provide useful information that has aided successful operations.

The NDLEA boss reaffirmed the agency's commitment to sustaining the offensive against drug trafficking and abuse in the country, noting that the fight against illicit drugs is critical to addressing the wider security and social challenges confronting the nation.

He further warned drug barons, traffickers, and peddlers to desist from their illicit activities or face the full weight of the law, stressing that the agency would continue to track them down regardless of where they operate.

Marwa appealed for sustained public support for the agency's operations, urging Nigerians to volunteer credible information about the activities of drug traffickers and abusers in their communities, while also encouraging parents and guardians to be vigilant about the activities of their wards.

The agency's record-breaking seizures and arrests come amid growing concerns about the rising rate of drug abuse among Nigerian youths and its link to insecurity, mental health challenges, and other social vices.

The NDLEA's renewed approach, which combines tough enforcement with rehabilitation and public sensitisation, has been widely commended as a holistic strategy capable of yielding sustained results in the country's drug war.
