Many Feared Dead as Terrorists, Bandits Clash in Niger
Many people are feared dead after suspected Lakurawa fighters clashed with armed bandits in Niger State, with reports indicating heavy casualties as security authorities continue monitoring the situation.
Many people are feared dead following a violent clash between suspected Lakurawa fighters and armed bandits in the Tapkin Giyayya area of Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The confrontation reportedly occurred after a group of armed bandits moved from forest hideouts in neighbouring Zamfara State into the Mashegu Forest through the Tudun Magaji area.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the incident on his official X account, both groups suffered casualties during the fierce exchange of gunfire.
Residents of the affected communities said the fighting was intense, with several armed men reportedly killed during the confrontation.
Witnesses also claimed that some of the surviving fighters were seen fleeing the area with gunshot wounds after the clash.
However, the exact number of those killed or injured could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Niger State, where criminal groups continue to operate across forests and remote communities.
Local sources said the movement of the armed bandits into the Mashegu Forest may have triggered the confrontation with the suspected Lakurawa fighters, who are believed to maintain a presence in parts of the area.
Residents expressed fears that the violence could further threaten lives and livelihoods if the security situation deteriorates.
As of Thursday, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement confirming the incident or providing details of the casualties.
There was also no confirmation on whether security operatives had been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The latest clash underscores the persistent security challenges facing communities across Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions, where armed groups frequently engage in attacks, kidnappings and deadly confrontations.
Observers say renewed efforts by security agencies will be required to prevent further escalation and protect residents from the activities of armed groups operating within the region’s forests.
Residents have called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and deploy more personnel to the affected communities to prevent additional attacks and restore normalcy.
