Makurdi Students Trained on Safety and Mental Health Skills
Students in Makurdi have received training on personal safety and mental health awareness, aimed at improving wellbeing and resilience in tertiary institutions. The programme focused on stress management, risk awareness, and encouraging students to seek help early while promoting safer learning environments.
Students in Makurdi have benefited from a capacity-building programme focused on personal safety awareness and mental health skills aimed at improving wellbeing and resilience among young people in tertiary institutions.
The initiative, organised by the International Human Rights and Gender Research Advocacy (IHRGA) in collaboration with CIFWCDI, brought together students from higher institutions in Benue State for interactive sessions on safety practices, emotional wellbeing, and responsible decision-making.
Facilitators at the programme emphasised the importance of mental health awareness, noting that many young people face academic pressure, social challenges, and emotional stress that can affect their performance and overall wellbeing if not properly managed.
Participants were also sensitised on personal safety, including how to identify risky situations, seek help when needed, and make informed choices in both physical and digital environments.
Organisers explained that the training was designed to equip students with practical life skills that go beyond the classroom, helping them navigate challenges in school and society more effectively.
The programme also encouraged open conversations around mental health, aiming to reduce stigma and promote early support-seeking behaviour among students.
Stakeholders said such initiatives are important in strengthening youth development and building safer, more supportive learning environments in Nigerian institutions.
