Kebbi Govt Raises Alarm Over Emergence of ‘Sai Mallam’ Terrorist Group

The Kebbi State Government has raised concerns over the emergence of a new terrorist group identified as the ‘Sai Mallam’ sect, warning that the group has established a presence in parts of the state, particularly in Argungu Local Government Area.

The State Security Adviser, retired Colonel Danladi Ribah, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ security meeting with the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the North-West geopolitical zone, Suleiman Mohammed Abdul, held at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi.

Ribah revealed that security agencies first detected members of the group in Zuru, where their activities were initially limited. However, he noted that intelligence reports now indicate a more significant presence in Argungu.

“Without an iota of doubt, ‘Sai Mallam’ adherents are present in large numbers in Argungu. They were earlier detected in Zuru, though in smaller numbers,” he stated.

According to the security adviser, the group was originally identified in neighbouring Sokoto State, where security agencies reportedly succeeded in containing its activities before it spread into other areas.

He assured residents that the Kebbi State Government was working closely with security agencies to monitor the situation and prevent the group from expanding its operations within the state.

Ribah further explained that Governor Nasir Idris had continued to provide extensive support to security agencies through logistical assistance, operational equipment, and financial resources to strengthen ongoing efforts against insecurity.

He noted that the state faces multiple security challenges from different criminal groups operating within and around its borders.

According to him, members of the Lakurawa group often enter Kebbi State through Sokoto State and the Republic of Niger, while the Mamudawa group infiltrates through neighbouring Kwara and Niger states.

He also disclosed that bandits responsible for attacks in parts of Kebbi frequently launch their operations from Zamfara State.

“Kebbi State Government is on top of the situation and will continue to do whatever is necessary to safeguard the lives and property of the people,” Ribah assured.

Speaking during the meeting, the District Head of Ambursa, Alhaji Isa Haruna Rasheed, called for increased funding for police commands and other security agencies operating in the region.

He argued that improved funding would strengthen security operations, enhance intelligence gathering, and improve the welfare and effectiveness of personnel combating criminal activities across the state.
