Jonathan Urges Judiciary to Uphold Justice, Rule of Law
Former President Goodluck Jonathan urged judges and lawyers to uphold justice and the rule of law, stressing that strong institutions, accountable leadership and judicial independence are vital for Nigeria’s future.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasised the need for a strong judiciary, effective institutions and strict adherence to the rule of law, stating that Nigeria’s future depends on the strength and independence of its democratic institutions.
Jonathan made the remarks on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Law Week organised by the Nigerian Bar Association Yenagoa Branch in Bayelsa State.
The event, themed “Securing the Future: Sustainable National Asset Protection in Africa; Opportunities, Risks and Regulatory Pathways,” attracted legal practitioners, judicial officers and stakeholders from across the country.
Speaking during a plenary session, the former president urged members of the Bench and Bar to remain committed to justice, fairness and the rule of law, describing them as custodians of Nigeria’s legal system and democratic values.
Jonathan stressed that national progress and stability can only be achieved when institutions are allowed to function independently and effectively. He noted that a prosperous future depends on a society where justice prevails over personal influence and where institutions are stronger than individuals.
According to him, the legal profession has a crucial responsibility in safeguarding democracy, protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring that the law serves all Nigerians equally, regardless of status or position.
He further stated that the country’s future can only be secured when justice is stronger than power, institutions are stronger than individuals and the legal system guarantees equal protection for both the powerful and the vulnerable.
The former president also called for reforms in Nigeria’s education sector, arguing that the country’s post-colonial educational framework must be restructured to meet modern realities and global standards.
Jonathan maintained that sustainable national development requires accountable leadership, robust institutions and a legal framework that promotes fairness, protects rights and creates equal opportunities for citizens.
He urged legal practitioners and judicial officers to continue defending the integrity of the justice system and contribute to building a nation founded on equity, transparency and the rule of law.
