Italian FA Chief Confirms Talks With Guardiola Over National Team Vacancy

The president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Giovanni Malagò, has confirmed that the federation is in contact with Pep Guardiola over the vacant Italy national team coaching position. Malagò described the discussions as "concrete attempts" to persuade the former Manchester City manager to take charge of the Azzurri as they seek to rebuild following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Guardiola, who recently left Manchester City after a trophy-laden spell, is regarded as the FIGC's preferred candidate. According to Malagò, senior Italian football figures, including Paolo Maldini and adviser Leonardo, have met with the Spanish coach in Barcelona to present their vision for the national team. However, Guardiola has previously stated that he intended to take a break from coaching after leaving City, making his acceptance uncertain.

Italy have been without a permanent head coach since Gennaro Gattuso stepped down after the team's failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. Other names reportedly under consideration include former Italy boss Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo, but Guardiola remains the federation's top target.

While no agreement has been reached, Malagò said the federation remains optimistic and is prepared to make exceptional efforts to secure Guardiola's appointment, believing his experience and success could help restore Italy's status among world football's elite.
