Iran Stages Mass Weddings for Couples Ready for War ‘Sacrifice’

Iranian authorities have organised mass public weddings in Tehran for couples who reportedly enrolled in a state-backed programme pledging readiness to sacrifice their lives in any future conflict involving the United States and Israel.

The ceremonies took place on Monday evening across several major locations in the capital, including Imam Hossein Square, where more than 100 couples were joined in a single large event. In total, hundreds of couples participated in coordinated wedding ceremonies held in different parts of Tehran, according to Iranian media reports.

State television broadcast the events, presenting them as part of efforts to strengthen national morale amid heightened regional tensions. The programme comes at a time of renewed friction with the United States, with President Donald Trump issuing repeated warnings of possible military action against Iran following a fragile ceasefire that ended hostilities which began on February 28.

Participants in the scheme had reportedly registered for what Iranian media described as a “self-sacrifice” initiative known locally as janfada. Those enrolled pledged willingness to support the country during wartime, including forming human chains around strategic infrastructure such as power stations and other key installations.

Officials say millions of Iranians have joined the initiative, including senior political figures such as Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and President Masoud Pezeshkian.

At the Imam Hossein Square ceremony, couples arrived in military vehicles fitted with mounted equipment before being formally married on a stage presided over by a cleric. The venue was decorated with balloons, flags and large portraits of Iranian leadership figures.

State media images showed emotional scenes, with newlyweds exchanging vows while crowds of supporters watched and cheered. Some participants described the ceremony as both a patriotic and religious duty.

One bride, speaking anonymously, said that despite the country’s wartime atmosphere, young Iranians still valued family life and marriage.

A groom interviewed by Mehr News Agency said the event coincided with the anniversary of the marriage of Imam Ali and Fatima, a significant occasion in Shia Islam, describing it as spiritually meaningful.

Authorities said at least 110 couples were married at Imam Hossein Square alone, with similar events taking place simultaneously in other parts of Tehran.

Since the outbreak of conflict, Iranian authorities have increasingly organised public demonstrations and mass gatherings aimed at showcasing unity, resilience and civilian support for the state during ongoing geopolitical tensions.
