IPOB Suspends Nnamdi Kanu’s Leadership Office, Takes Over Movement Affairs
IPOB has suspended the Office of Nnamdi Kanu and assumed control of the movement’s affairs, citing security concerns, monitored communications, and the need to protect members from arrests.
The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the suspension of the Office of its Leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as well as the position of Director of Radio Biafra, in a significant development within the separatist movement.
The decision was reached during a full-house meeting of the IPOB Directorate held on Wednesday, where members reviewed intelligence reports concerning communications allegedly originating from Kanu while in detention at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, the group disclosed that the Directorate of State would henceforth administer the affairs of the organisation and oversee all activities of the movement.
According to the statement, the leadership considered the move necessary after observing that certain communications linked to Kanu had allegedly contributed to the arrest and deaths of some IPOB members in the South-East.
The group stated that it was concerned about the impact of what it described as “unguarded communications” and the consequences such messages could have on members and supporters across the region.
IPOB further explained that Kanu’s interactions and visits while in custody were being closely monitored by security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), making it necessary for the organisation to take precautionary measures.
The Directorate also expressed concern over alleged plans by certain individuals to establish a new militia group, warning that such actions could trigger renewed violence and instability in the region.
According to the leadership, the suspension is intended to prevent reckless actions, unchecked authority, and statements capable of exposing members to unnecessary arrests, torture, or death.
The group maintained that IPOB was founded and developed collectively by Biafrans in the Diaspora and not by a single individual. It stressed that no one person possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the apex leadership organ of the movement.
IPOB added that it would no longer accept responsibility for activities carried out by individuals or groups acting in the name of the suspended office, insisting that only recognised structures within the organisation have the authority to speak or act on its behalf.
