Fresh Zamfara Bandit Attack Displaces 484 People, Including 271 Children – IOM
The International Organisation for Migration says a bandit attack in Zamfara State displaced 484 people, including 271 children, after gunmen attacked Gummi Local Government Area. Humanitarian agencies are providing emergency support to the affected families.
No fewer than 484 people have been displaced following a fresh bandit attack on Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, with children accounting for more than half of those forced to flee their homes, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The IOM disclosed that the attack, which occurred on 15 June, affected 101 households and displaced 271 children. The agency's assessment also showed that women and girls made up a significant proportion of those affected, highlighting the growing humanitarian impact of insecurity in the state.
According to the report, many of the displaced have sought refuge in neighbouring communities, where they require urgent humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, healthcare and protection services. The organisation warned that continued attacks are worsening the plight of vulnerable families across north-west Nigeria.
The latest incident adds to the rising number of internally displaced persons in Zamfara and other parts of the region, where repeated attacks by armed groups have forced thousands of residents to abandon their homes and livelihoods. Humanitarian agencies have continued to call for improved security measures and increased support for affected communities.
The IOM said it is working with government authorities and humanitarian partners to assess the needs of those displaced and coordinate emergency assistance. It also urged sustained efforts to address the underlying causes of displacement and protect civilians from further violence.
