FG Unveils Programme to Boost University Funding, Global Competitiveness
The Federal Government has launched the National University Advancement Programme to improve university funding through alumni engagement, fundraising and strategic partnerships, with the goal of making Nigerian universities more financially sustainable and globally competitive.
The Federal Government has launched the National University Advancement Programme (NUAP), a new initiative aimed at strengthening the financial sustainability of Nigerian universities while improving their global competitiveness through enhanced alumni engagement, fundraising and strategic partnerships. The programme is part of ongoing reforms to reposition higher education in the country.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the National University Advancement Programme training for university officials, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the initiative is designed to complement, rather than replace, government funding. He explained that the programme would create new opportunities for research funding, scholarships, innovation and long-term institutional growth.
According to the minister, the programme was established through a partnership involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation and the Africa Finance Corporation. It will establish professionally managed Advancement Offices across federal universities to coordinate alumni relations, donor engagement, endowment management, strategic communications and institutional partnerships.
Alausa noted that stronger relationships with alumni and development partners would improve universities' financial resilience, expand research opportunities and provide greater support for students through scholarships, mentorship and improved infrastructure. He added that the government's long-term goal is to build universities capable of competing globally while addressing Nigeria's development needs.
The National University Advancement Programme is one of the Federal Ministry of Education's latest higher education reform initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Officials expressed optimism that the initiative will help Nigerian universities attract more private-sector investment, strengthen innovation and improve their international reputation.
