FG Approves N7.5bn TETFund Grants for 174 Research Projects
The Federal Government has approved N7.5 billion in TETFund research grants for 174 projects across Nigerian universities, targeting innovation, agriculture, health, energy, defence and economic development.
The Federal Government has approved N7.5 billion in research grants through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to support 174 research projects across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The funding initiative is aimed at strengthening research, innovation and technological development while enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities and research institutions.
According to TETFund, the approved grants range between N13.6 million and N49.97 million per project, depending on the scope and strategic relevance of the research.
The projects cover several national priority areas, including health and social welfare, agriculture, science and engineering, power and energy, renewable energy, defence technology, security studies and other sectors considered critical to national development.
TETFund said the intervention aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting practical research capable of addressing societal challenges, boosting productivity and supporting economic growth.
The agency noted that the selected projects emerged through a rigorous evaluation process designed to identify innovative proposals with the potential for significant impact on national development.
Among the institutions that secured the highest number of grants is Federal University of Technology Minna, which received 18 grants.
It was followed by Federal University of Technology Owerri with 11 grants and Ahmadu Bello University with 10 grants.
Other major beneficiaries include University of Ilorin with eight grants, Bayero University Kano with seven grants, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University with seven grants.
Additional institutions benefiting from the scheme are University of Jos, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, each receiving multiple grants.
Education stakeholders have described the approval as a significant boost for academic research and innovation in Nigeria, noting that increased investment in research is essential for addressing national challenges and promoting sustainable development.
The intervention is expected to encourage collaboration among researchers, improve knowledge generation and support the development of homegrown solutions to economic, technological and security challenges facing the country.
TETFund reaffirmed its commitment to supporting impactful research that contributes to national growth and improves the quality of higher education in Nigeria.
