FG Approves N111bn for Akwanga-Jos Highway Construction
The Federal Government has approved N111bn for the construction of the Akwanga-Jos Highway Section One, as Minister Dave Umahi says the project will boost connectivity and economic growth.
The Federal Government has approved the immediate release of N111 billion for the construction of Section One of the Akwanga-Jos Highway, as part of ongoing efforts to accelerate major infrastructure projects across the country.
The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Friday while inspecting Sections One and Two of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway alongside members of the National Assembly.
Umahi described the approval as a significant development for Nigerians and a major step in the implementation of the Federal Government’s legacy infrastructure projects.
According to the minister, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate release of funds to the contractor handling the first section of the highway, which covers about 125 kilometres from Akwanga to Jos.
“The President has directed the immediate release of N111 billion to CGC for Section One of the fourth legacy project – from Akwanga to Jos, covering about 125km,” Umahi said.
He added that Tinubu had also directed the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, to represent him at the official flag-off ceremony of the project scheduled for July 1, 2026.
Umahi said members of the National Assembly would also be invited to participate in the event, describing the project as an important intervention aimed at improving transportation links and supporting economic activities.
The minister further disclosed that the President had approved the immediate design of the Gombe-Bauchi Road project, which spans approximately 156 kilometres.
“We are already working on it,” Umahi said, adding that the move was part of the administration’s broader plan to address critical infrastructure gaps nationwide.
He also announced that the second carriageway of another major road project, stretching from Ebonyi State through Benue, Kogi and Nasarawa States to the Oweto Bridge, would undergo design and procurement processes.
According to Umahi, the approvals reflect the administration’s commitment to delivering strategic road projects that will improve connectivity, enhance trade and promote economic development.
“This is wonderful news for us and all Nigerians. It shows the commitment of the President to delivering critical road infrastructure that will enhance connectivity and economic growth,” he said.
The minister noted that the government remained focused on completing its four legacy road projects, which are expected to transform transportation networks and improve movement of goods and people across different regions of the country.
