The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned Igoin Peter before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged ₦25 million fraud involving impersonation and false pretences.
According to the EFCC, the defendant allegedly posed as a Special Adviser to the President on ICT Development and Digital Innovation to obtain funds from companies under the guise of securing cryptocurrency exchange operational licences.
The anti-graft agency said Peter was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on impersonation and obtaining money under false pretences.
Prosecutors alleged that between August 2024 and October 2025, the defendant fraudulently obtained ₦25.9 million from Dontown Assets Limited through a Zenith Bank account belonging to Smartz Skyward Energy Limited.
The EFCC further alleged that he separately obtained ₦19.8 million from Jeriod Limited using the same claim that he was connected to the Presidency and could facilitate cryptocurrency exchange licences.
Peter pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read in court.
Following the plea, prosecution counsel Christopher Mshelia requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant in Kuje Correctional Centre pending trial.
Justice Egwuatu granted bail in the sum of ₦400 million with two sureties in like sum. The court ordered that one surety must own property in Abuja and provide supporting documents, while the second must be a Grade Level 15 civil servant.
The defendant was ordered remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre pending fulfilment of the bail conditions.
