Gov Adeleke Extends UNIOSUN VC Tenure For Two Years

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has approved a two-year extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye.

Adeleke announced the decision on Monday while inaugurating the reconstituted Governing Council of the university at the Osun State Government House in Osogbo.

The governor said the extension was approved in the interest of the university and was aimed at strengthening its governance structure, ensuring continuity and preventing a leadership vacuum that could disrupt the institution’s administration and operations.

Adeleke disclosed that Adebooye initially declined the offer before eventually accepting the extension.

The governor also retained Professor Adewale Abiodun Oladipo as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, citing his experience and familiarity with the university system.

Other members of the reconstituted council include Gbadegesin Lawal, Lateef Olalekan Olayanju, Akinola Franklin Omoniyi, Chief Funminiyi Awotide, Orija Samuel Adebayo, Adewale Adetayo Bola and Olawale Oludayo Abolade.

Addressing the council members, Adeleke urged them to discharge their responsibilities with humility, integrity, courage and commitment to the public interest.

He also called on the council and university management to work harmoniously, warning against a situation where both bodies operate as competing centres of authority.

The governor said the two arms must operate within the law and maintain mutual respect while working towards the advancement of the university.

Adeleke described UNIOSUN as an important investment of the people of Osun State, noting that its academic and research activities contribute to the economic, social and intellectual development of the state and Nigeria.

Adebooye, who has led the university since becoming its Vice-Chancellor, expressed appreciation to the governor, members of the State Executive Council and the newly inaugurated Governing Council.

He pledged that the university management would continue working with the council and other stakeholders to sustain the institution’s growth and strengthen its position among leading universities in Africa and beyond.

The tenure extension comes as UNIOSUN continues to focus on academic development, research, infrastructure and staff welfare.

The new governing council is expected to build on the achievements of the previous council while supporting further improvements across the university.

Adeleke’s decision also provides continuity in the university’s leadership at a time when institutions of higher learning face increasing demands for stronger governance, improved academic standards and better infrastructure.

With the additional two years approved, Adebooye will continue to oversee the affairs of UNIOSUN and work with the reconstituted governing council on the institution’s development agenda.
