DSS Intercepts Arms Shipment Bound for Bandit Kingpin, Nabs Suspect
DSS operatives arrested a suspected arms courier in Kano, recovering rifles and RPGs allegedly destined for a notorious Zamfara bandit leader in a major intelligence-led operation.
Operatives of the Department of State Services have arrested a suspected arms courier in Kano State while allegedly transporting weapons intended for delivery to a notorious bandit leader operating in Zamfara State.
According to an operational report obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the suspect was apprehended on Friday in Gezawa Local Government Area following intelligence gathered by security operatives.
The report indicated that the suspect was intercepted while moving a cache of arms and ammunition from Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Funtua in Katsina State, from where the weapons were expected to be delivered to criminal elements operating in the North-West.
Items recovered during the operation included three AK-47 rifles, four rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes with accompanying warheads, and two empty magazines.
Security sources said preliminary investigations linked the consignment to a suspected bandit kingpin believed to be coordinating criminal activities across parts of Zamfara State.
According to the report, the suspect admitted during interrogation that he had been contracted to transport the weapons and was promised a payment of N450,000 upon successful delivery.
“The suspect confessed that he was contracted to transport the weapons from Maigatari to Funtua and was promised a payment of N450,000 upon successful delivery,” the report stated.
Investigators are now working to uncover the broader network behind the movement of the weapons and identify other individuals connected to the operation.
The DSS described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to disrupt the flow of arms and ammunition to criminal groups responsible for banditry, kidnappings, attacks on communities and other security threats across the country.
The agency noted that intelligence-driven operations remain a critical component of efforts to combat organised crime and terrorism, particularly in regions affected by persistent insecurity.
The suspect remains in DSS custody and is expected to face further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
Security agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence operations aimed at dismantling logistics and supply networks that sustain armed criminal groups across the North-West and other troubled regions.
Authorities expressed confidence that information obtained from the suspect would assist ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the arms trafficking network.
