Danjuma Donates N3bn, Dangote Gives N500m at Gowon Autobiography Launch
Former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), on Tuesday donated N3 billion during the public presentation of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography in Abuja.
The event, which drew top government officials, diplomats, business leaders and senior military officers, also witnessed a N500 million donation from billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote in support of the book launch.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, and several prominent national figures attended the ceremony celebrating Gowon’s life, military career and years in public service.
The autobiography, titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, was formally unveiled during the event, with reviews and tributes highlighting Gowon’s role in Nigeria’s history, especially during and after the civil war.
Danjuma, who served as the chief presenter at the launch, was represented by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Martin Luther Agwai (retd.).
Beyond the N3 billion donation, Danjuma also directed that 12 copies of the autobiography be purchased and distributed to libraries of the 20 universities that awarded Gowon honorary doctorate degrees.
The gesture, according to organisers, was aimed at preserving Nigeria’s political and military history for younger generations and encouraging leadership studies in academic institutions.
Business mogul Aliko Dangote equally announced a donation of N500 million in support of the project, further boosting fundraising efforts during the launch.
Another prominent businessman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, also contributed by purchasing copies of the autobiography valued at N25 million.
The event featured speeches from national leaders, reflections on Gowon’s role in nation-building, and discussions about leadership, reconciliation and public service.
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, reviewed the autobiography during the ceremony, describing it as an important contribution to Nigeria’s historical records and political memory.
Several speakers at the event praised Gowon for his post-civil war reconciliation efforts, particularly his “no victor, no vanquished” declaration, which many credited for helping Nigeria heal after the conflict.
The launch concluded with tributes to Gowon’s legacy as a statesman and advocate for peace, unity and national development decades after leaving office.
