Court Ruling Deals Blow to Obi–Kwankwaso 2027 Ticket Bid

Fresh uncertainty has emerged over the proposed 2027 presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso after a Federal High Court reversed an earlier order that recognised the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a registered political party.

The court, sitting in Lokoja, set aside its previous judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC, effectively withdrawing the party's legal recognition pending the resolution of the case. The ruling has cast doubt over the party's participation in the 2027 general elections and the validity of candidates seeking to contest under its platform.

The decision represents a setback for the emerging political alliance involving Obi and Kwankwaso, who had been linked with the NDC ahead of the next election cycle. Although neither politician has officially reacted to the judgment, political observers believe the development could affect ongoing realignments among opposition parties.

Despite the ruling, the NDC has insisted that the judgment does not amount to its final deregistration. The party announced that it would challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal, expressing confidence that the earlier recognition would eventually be restored through the legal process.

Supporters of the Obi political movement also downplayed the ruling, describing it as a temporary legal obstacle rather than the end of the party's ambitions. They maintained that the movement remains focused on its long-term political objectives despite the court's decision.

The latest judgment adds another layer of uncertainty to Nigeria's evolving political landscape as parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
