Captors' Demands: Bandits Call for Prisoner Swap and Return of Seized Livestock to Free Abducted Ex-Army Spokesman
The abductors of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife have released a video demanding the release of three detained insurgent fighters and the return of seized livestock as conditions for the couple's freedom.
The armed syndicate responsible for the high-profile abduction of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retired), and his wife has shifted demands away from a traditional financial ransom, instead requesting a prisoner swap and the return of confiscated property. The captors outlined their specific conditions in a four-minute video clip delivered to media channels days after the retired senior military officer and his spouse were violently intercepted during an ambush in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The initial assault occurred on 30 May 2026, when gunmen opened fire on the couple’s vehicle as they travelled to a wedding, forcing their driver to flee with severe gunshot wounds before the general and his wife were marched into the forest.
In the newly surfaced footage, the captive couple appeared directly on camera to appeal for urgent state intervention to secure their release. Speaking in Hausa, Major General Abubakar’s wife addressed Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda alongside traditional rulers and community leaders across five local government areas, specifically naming Matazu, Musawa, Kankia, Kurfi, and Dutsin-Ma. She explained that the bandit commander, identified by security sources as a notorious regional leader named Kachallah Muhammad, is demanding the unconditional release of three detained fighters named Sani, Aminu, and Nasiru. She noted that two of these individuals were previously apprehended by state forces in Jikamshi, while the third was arrested during a security operation in Kano State, adding that the gang is also demanding the immediate return of hundreds of cattle and sheep allegedly seized from them during recent military raids.
Appearing in a blue kaftan and a black cap, the retired general spoke briefly at the end of the recording to reinforce his wife's pleas, urging top government stakeholders and community representatives to actively embrace dialogue and peaceful engagement to resolve the crisis. Security analysts note that the targeted abduction of a former military spokesperson highlights the deepening security crisis gripping north-western Nigeria, where heavily armed criminal cartels continue to execute high-value kidnappings despite ongoing tactical operations by the Nigerian Armed Forces. While specialized military rescue teams are currently working to locate the camp, regional authorities face a delicate dilemma as they weigh the captors' demands for a prisoner exchange against national security protocols.
