Atiku Defeats Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen In Imo ADC Presidential Primary
Atiku Abubakar won the ADC presidential primary in Imo State with 52,222 votes, defeating Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a contest described as peaceful, orderly, and transparent.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged winner of the African Democratic Congress presidential primary election held in Imo State, defeating former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a closely watched contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primary election was conducted at the party secretariat in Owerri under the supervision of the Presidential Primary Election Committee led by its chairman, Eko Atu, who declared the exercise peaceful and orderly. According to him, the process reflected the internal democratic values the party aims to project as it positions itself as a major opposition force.
Announcing the results, the committee stated that Atiku Abubakar secured a total of 52,222 votes, giving him a commanding lead over his opponents. Rotimi Amaechi came second with 7,659 votes, while Mohammed Hayatu-Deen placed third with 1,121 votes.
Eko Atu commended party delegates and members for what he described as a disciplined and transparent exercise, noting that there were no major disruptions or reports of violence during the voting process. He added that the outcome demonstrated the willingness of party members to participate in a structured and credible selection process.
Atiku’s victory further strengthens his position within the ADC as the party continues to consolidate support from various political blocs across the country. His emergence is expected to intensify political realignments within the opposition landscape as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Reacting to the exercise through party officials, stakeholders reiterated that the ADC remains committed to democratic principles and internal inclusiveness, stressing that the primaries were designed to give all aspirants a fair opportunity to test their popularity among delegates.
Observers note that the result may deepen existing tensions within opposition ranks, especially as other political figures continue to reposition themselves ahead of the general elections.
Party officials, however, maintained that the outcome reflects unity and progress within the ADC, insisting that the focus going forward will be on strengthening the party structure and presenting a strong front for the 2027 presidential race.
