Speaking to the press following Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Jordan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Scaloni addressed the recurring theme of Messi’s influence on the squad. Despite the "La Albiceleste" securing a comfortable win to top Group J, the post-match conversation was dominated by Messi's record-breaking free-kick and his role as a second-half substitute.

Scaloni explained that the word "uncomfortable" stems from the sheer gap between Messi and the rest of the footballing world. He noted that as a coach, it is difficult to find new ways to describe a player who consistently produces miracles on the pitch, even at 39 years old.

"To be honest, it’s uncomfortable for me to talk about him because he is just on another level," Scaloni remarked. "What else can I say that hasn't been said? Every time he steps on the pitch, he creates something that we have never seen before. Managing him is a privilege, but analyzing him is almost impossible because he defies the logic of the game."

Regarding the decision to start Messi on the bench against Jordan, Scaloni emphasized that it was part of a broader strategy to manage the workload of his key players. However, he admitted that having the world's greatest player as a "reserve" is a strange feeling for any manager.

"It feels strange and even a bit uncomfortable to see him sitting there next to us [on the bench] while the game is on," Scaloni added. "But we have a plan for this tournament. He understands the rotation, and as he showed today, he only needs a few minutes to decide a match. His impact is immediate and devastating."

Messi’s goal in the 80th minute was his 19th in World Cup history, making him the all-time top scorer in the competition. It also marked the seventh consecutive World Cup game in which he has found the back of the net.

Scaloni maintained that the focus remains on the collective effort, but acknowledged that Messi’s presence provides a psychological edge that no other team possesses.

Argentina is now preparing for a Round of 32 clash against **Cabo Verde** in Miami. With the knockout stages beginning, Scaloni is expected to return his captain to the starting lineup as they continue their quest to defend the title they won in Qatar four years ago.
