Akpeyi Lauds Suzuki’s Goalkeeping Masterclass in Japan’s 2–2 Draw with Netherlands

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has praised Japan’s Zion Suzuki following the 23-year-old’s outstanding performance in their 2–2 draw against the Netherlands in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group F match at the Dallas Stadium.

Speaking during his halftime analysis on SuperSport, Akpeyi said Suzuki’s display justified the decision by Japan’s coaching staff to start him ahead of more experienced goalkeepers in the squad.

“I want to give credit to the goalkeeper. This tells why he was chosen in goal ahead of the older ones on the bench because he has been able to concentrate on the game,” Akpeyi said.

“So far, he has been alert and waiting to see the loose balls with strong hands as well. It tells that he has been able to keep his team in the game.”

Suzuki, born to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother, made four crucial saves in the match and played a key role in ensuring Japan remained competitive throughout the encounter.

He produced an early sharp stop to deny Donyell Malen, setting the tone for a composed and confident performance under pressure against a strong Dutch attack.

Japan twice came from behind to secure a valuable point in the match. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring for the Netherlands with a powerful header before Keito Nakamura equalised with a well-struck effort into the bottom corner.

Crysencio Summerville restored the Dutch lead with a fine finish, but Daichi Kamada scored a dramatic 89th-minute equaliser to rescue a draw for Japan.

At the other end, Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen endured a difficult outing after a costly error led to Japan’s late equaliser, while Ryan Gravenberch stood out for the Dutch with an impressive midfield display.

The result leaves Group F finely balanced after the opening round of fixtures, with Japan sitting second behind Sweden.
