The Adamawa State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has officially denied endorsing any governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections, warning against the unauthorized use of the association's name for political purposes.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Adamawa State has debunked reports claiming it has adopted a preferred candidate for the state’s 2027 governorship race.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the State Chairman of CAN, Rev. Dr. Joel Manzo, the association clarified that it has not sanctioned any political endorsement, specifically distancing itself from a recent pronouncement linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant, Ahmad Tijjani Galadima.
The clarification follows reports that a group of women, allegedly claiming to represent the CAN Women Wing, had during a visit described Galadima as "God’s chosen candidate."
Rev. Manzo emphasized that neither the state leadership nor any of its recognized organs authorized the endorsement. He noted that the individuals involved—later identified as members of the Kauna Christian Women Forum—were not acting on behalf of the official CAN structure.
"We wish to state categorically that CAN has not adopted or endorsed any candidate for the 2027 general elections," Manzo said. "While Christians are encouraged to participate in the democratic process and support candidates of their choice, no individual or group has the mandate to speak for CAN or its wings without official clearance."
The association noted that all aspirants seeking elective positions in Adamawa are regarded as "sons and daughters" of the faith community, but maintained that the body must remain politically neutral to preserve its unity.
Manzo warned that such unauthorized endorsements could "sow seeds of division among believers and undermine the unity of the Church." He urged the group responsible to publicly clarify that their position was personal and did not represent the views of the state’s Christian leadership.
The statement concluded by reaffirming CAN’s commitment to internal discipline and its role as a moral guide rather than a political mouthpiece, calling on all members to prioritize the peace and stability of Adamawa State as the 2027 political cycle approaches.
