2026 World Cup: Belgium Vows to ‘Defend Football’ After FIFA Overturns Balogun Suspension

Belgium has vowed to “defend football” after FIFA controversially suspended the automatic one-match ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun, a decision that has sparked widespread criticism ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash.

Belgium and the United States are scheduled to meet on Monday at Lumen Field in Seattle, with the winner progressing to the quarter-finals.

The controversy erupted after FIFA suspended the enforcement of Balogun’s one-match ban, allowing the striker to remain eligible despite receiving a straight red card during the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to Forbes, the Royal Belgian Football Association expressed shock at the decision, insisting that FIFA’s disciplinary rules clearly state that a player sent off automatically misses the team’s next match.

The federation said it was exploring all available legal options to protect the principles of fair play and the rights of participating teams.

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia also criticised the decision, joking that he initially thought July 5 had become “April Fool’s Day.”

Garcia said his players would not only represent Belgium but would also be defending the integrity and ethics of football when they face the United States.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois admitted the squad was surprised by the timing of FIFA’s announcement but insisted the team’s attention remained firmly on the match.

The decision has also drawn criticism from across European football.

England manager Thomas Tuchel questioned FIFA’s disciplinary process after defender Jarell Quansah was suspended following his red card against Mexico, asking who now decides when disciplinary sanctions should be overturned.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney described the ruling as “an absolute disgrace,” saying FIFA President Gianni Infantino should be ashamed of the decision.

Former France international Thierry Henry also criticised the timing of the reversal, arguing that it disrupted Belgium’s preparations by forcing the team to rethink its tactical approach shortly before kickoff.

The controversy has intensified following reports that United States President Donald Trump spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino before the disciplinary ruling, although no evidence has been presented linking the reported conversation to FIFA’s final decision.

The outcome of Belgium’s Round of 16 encounter with the United States is now expected to be closely watched amid the growing debate over FIFA’s disciplinary consistency.
