World Cup Victory Is My Best Birthday Gift — Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has described the successful conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a gallant finish and a fitting birthday gift, saying the tournament showcased the immense potential of young people when given the opportunity to excel.

Obi made the remarks in a statement posted on his verified X account shortly after the World Cup final, where he reflected on the significance of the tournament and its broader lessons for leadership and national development.

He said the competition demonstrated that competence, character, capacity and capability remain the true ingredients of success, stressing that the performance of young players throughout the tournament should inspire governments and institutions to invest more in youth development.

“The FIFA World Cup concluded successfully today, with the best team emerging victorious,” Obi wrote.

“This is yet another fitting birthday gift, further demonstrating that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail.”

According to the former Anambra State governor, the quality displayed by the players throughout the tournament reaffirmed his long-held belief that young people possess the ability to transform societies when entrusted with responsibility.

“Today, competence, capacity, character and capability were on full display. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are properly nurtured, entrusted with responsibility and given the opportunity to lead, they deliver outstanding results,” he stated.

Obi urged Nigerian leaders to draw lessons from the World Cup by creating an environment where merit, innovation and hard work are rewarded rather than overlooked.

He maintained that empowering young Nigerians through quality education, skills development and inclusive governance remains essential to achieving sustainable national progress.

The former governor also reiterated his vision of building a better country founded on accountability, productivity and equal opportunities for all citizens.

“This is the spirit we must replicate across every sector of our national life. A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress and honour to our nation,” he added.

Obi, who turned 65 on Sunday, received goodwill messages from political associates, supporters and admirers across the country, with many celebrating his contributions to public service and his continued advocacy for good governance, youth inclusion and national development.
