World Cup: Ian Wright Blasts Canada Coach Marsch Over Switzerland Defeat
Former England striker Ian Wright has criticised Canada coach Jesse Marsch after Canada’s 2-1 World Cup defeat to Switzerland, saying tactical decisions cost the team home advantage and group leadership.
Former England striker Ian Wright has criticised Canada head coach Jesse Marsch following the country’s 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result denied Canada the opportunity to finish top of the group and retain home advantage heading into the Round of 32.
Prior to the encounter at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada occupied first position in Group A and needed only a draw to secure qualification as group winners. However, Switzerland produced a strong second-half performance to claim all three points.
Ruben Vargas opened the scoring for the visitors shortly after the restart in the 46th minute before Johan Manzambi doubled Switzerland’s advantage in the 57th minute. Promise David reduced the deficit for Canada in the 76th minute, but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser.
Despite the defeat, Canada still progressed to the knockout stage after Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 in the other group fixture. However, Switzerland’s victory ensured they finished above Canada in the standings.
The outcome means Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their Round of 32 fixture, benefiting from familiar surroundings, local support and reduced travel demands. Canada, on the other hand, must travel to Los Angeles for their first knockout-round match.
Reacting to the result during ITV’s World Cup coverage, Wright questioned Marsch’s tactical approach and suggested the Canadian coach failed to demonstrate enough belief in his team from the start of the match.
According to Wright, Canada missed a significant opportunity to secure a more favourable route in the competition.
He argued that remaining in their home country for the knockout phase would have provided a considerable advantage and accused Marsch of being overly cautious in his decision-making.
Wright further stated that some of the coach’s comments after matches appeared more focused on projecting confidence than reflecting the realities of the team’s performances.
Canada will now shift attention to their Round of 32 clash in Los Angeles, where they will attempt to keep their World Cup campaign alive despite surrendering top spot in Group A on the final matchday.
