World Cup 2026: ‘He Looks Sluggish, Off the Pace’ — Craig Burley Questions Neymar’s Ability

Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has expressed doubts over Neymar’s ability to make a meaningful impact for Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the forward’s return from a lengthy injury layoff.

Neymar made his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023 when he came on as a second-half substitute in the Selecao’s 3-0 victory over Scotland on June 24.

The 34-year-old replaced Matheus Cunha in the 76th minute of the Group C encounter, receiving a warm reception from supporters at Miami Stadium as he returned to international action after months on the sidelines.

Despite the positive reaction from fans, Burley believes there are legitimate concerns about Neymar’s current physical condition and ability to influence matches against stronger opponents later in the tournament.

Speaking on ESPN, the former Scotland international questioned whether Brazil should rely on the veteran forward as they prepare for the knockout rounds.

“When Neymar entered the game, there was considerable excitement among the crowd, both in the stadium and back in Brazil, regarding this iconic player,” Burley said.

“However, if you are Joao Pedro or one of the others who were left out of the squad, you might be thinking, ‘this is merely a sentimental choice.’”

Burley acknowledged that Neymar is still regaining match fitness but insisted the forward appeared far from his best against Scotland.

“I understand he hasn’t had much playing time, but he appeared quite sluggish and out of sync,” he added.

The former Chelsea midfielder also questioned whether Neymar could provide the spark Brazil may need in the latter stages of the competition.

“If Brazil needs to rely on him in the later stages of the tournament, can he genuinely come on and make a difference against stronger opponents? He even had difficulty against Scotland,” Burley stated.

Neymar remains Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals in 129 appearances and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the country’s history.

However, recurring injuries have repeatedly disrupted his career, preventing him from maintaining consistent form over extended periods.

Brazil finished top of Group C with seven points, edging Morocco on goal difference to secure a place in the Round of 32. As the tournament enters its knockout phase, attention will remain on whether Neymar can regain full fitness and play a decisive role in Brazil’s quest for a sixth World Cup title.
