Widow Alleges Nigerian Air Force Caused Husband's Death, Then Abandoned Her Family of Three Children
A widow has publicly accused the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) of abandoning her and her three young children after an incident led to the death of her husband, Joseph, who was the family's sole provider.
A grieving mother of three has spoken out against the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), accusing the military branch of failing to follow through on promises of support after an operational incident resulted in the tragic death of her husband, Joseph. The widow stated that after an initial show of sympathy, the authorities have completely severed communication, leaving her to raise their young family alone without any financial safety net.
Speaking via a telephone interview, the distraught widow explained that her husband was the sole provider for the household, and his sudden absence has plunged them into severe hardship. She recalled that immediately following the tragedy, high-ranking Air Force representatives paid a condolence visit to her residence, delivering words of comfort that initially gave the family a sense of security.
“He was our breadwinner. When the Air Force delegation came to visit us, the reassuring way they spoke filled me with hope. I felt deeply encouraged by the commitments they made to us at that time,” she shared in a emotional voice. “However, the moment they walked out the door, the entire situation changed. I have not received a single word from them since. My husband took care of all our daily needs, and now he is simply gone. I don’t understand why they changed their attitude or why they have completely ignored us.”
The widow added that the emotional toll has been incredibly heavy on her children, who frequently ask when their father will return. Her family consists of three children: a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a five-year-old. She noted that the youngest child has been particularly devastated, crying constantly due to the sudden absence of his father.
According to the widow, the only financial assistance the military branch provided was a one-time cash gift handed over during the condolence visit.
“They gave me N200,000 when they visited, stating it was meant to assist with immediate feeding costs for the children. Since that day, my phone has not rung once, and they have never reached out to check on us again. It is incredibly painful,” she lamented.
Faced with mounting financial pressure, the mother made an urgent public appeal to federal authorities and government leadership to intervene, specifically requesting sponsorship to cover her children's schooling and long-term upkeep.
“My primary plea to the government is to assist me in educating and raising my three children. Their father was an exceptional parent who fully shouldered their developmental needs. I want the government to step in, take responsibility, and ensure that my children's academic futures are not destroyed by this tragedy,” she pleaded.
Reflecting on the night of the incident, the widow recounted how unexpected and shocking the news of her husband's death was. She remembered leaving the house alongside Joseph earlier that day—she was heading to visit her sister, while he was departing for his duties.
The nightmare began after 8:00 p.m. when she received an unfamiliar phone call asking her to confirm if she was married to Joseph. Upon confirming, the caller informed her that her husband had been involved in a severe accident.
In a state of panic, she immediately contacted her husband's elder brother to report the situation. Because the hour was late, the family faced immediate logistical hurdles trying to secure transit to the medical facility, as commercial drivers in Lagos were unwilling to operate due to the late hour and a fear of running into police checkpoints.
The caller eventually notified her that Joseph had been rushed to a medical center in the Mushin area of Lagos State. After obtaining the attending physician's direct phone number, the widow's brother-in-law began calling the doctor, desperately pleading with the medical staff to do everything possible to stabilize Joseph until the family could arrive the next morning.
Tragically, just minutes after that conversation, the physician called back with the devastating news that Joseph had succumbed to his injuries. The next morning, the widow, accompanied by supportive relatives, visited the hospital to identify and claim her husband's body.
