Why We Want Nigerians in American Politics – US Community Leader

The United Nigerian Americans Council (UNAC) in Maryland has launched a coordinated initiative to motivate, empower, and prepare Nigerian-Americans to actively run for public office and participate heavily in the United States democratic process.

According to Dr. Chris Ademiluyi, the leader of the council, mobilizing the Nigerian diaspora into mainstream American politics is a critical step to transforming the community from a passive economic group into an influential political bloc capable of shaping policy.

Dr. Ademiluyi highlighted that while the Nigerian diaspora in the United States is widely recognized as one of the most highly educated and socio-economically successful immigrant demographics, that success has not yet fully translated into proportional political representation.

The council's strategy aims to address several structural goals:

  • Building Legislative Representation: Encouraging qualified professionals within the community to contest local, state, and federal positions to ensure diaspora interests are represented in policy-making.
  • Civic Education and Mobilization: Educating community members on voter registration, grassroots campaign volunteering, and the long-term impact of local municipal policies on immigrant families.
  • Creating Strategic Alliances: Fostering partnerships with broader African-American and minority political coalitions in Maryland and across the U.S. to build stronger voting blocs and support diaspora candidates.

The UNAC emphasized that deeper political integration within the United States yields dual benefits. Logically, it allows the Nigerian-American community to push for localized structural improvements—such as better community funding, educational equity, and favorable immigration pathways.

On a broader scale, establishing a robust network of Nigerian-American lawmakers and policymakers creates a highly effective diplomatic and economic bridge. This political presence can help positively influence bilateral trade, foreign direct investment, and international policies between the United States government and Nigeria.
