US Tariff Refund Boosts Philips' Earnings Outlook
Philips has raised its 2026 earnings outlook after receiving €186 million ($211 million) in US tariff refunds, boosting its second-quarter profits and cash flow. The company says the refund has strengthened its financial position despite continued global economic uncertainties.
Dutch healthcare technology company Philips has raised its financial outlook after receiving €186 million ($211 million) in refunds for US import tariffs, recovering almost all the duties it had previously paid. The refund significantly strengthened the company's second-quarter financial performance and prompted an upgrade to its earnings and cash flow projections for the year.
Philips reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter results, with comparable sales rising by four per cent and its adjusted EBITA margin improving to 16.4 per cent. The company said the tariff refund played a major role in boosting profitability, although it noted that inflationary pressures and trade-related costs continue to affect its operations.
Chief Executive Officer Roy Jakobs said the refund has improved the company's financial position, allowing Philips to increase its full-year adjusted EBITA margin and free cash flow guidance. Despite the improved outlook, he cautioned that the global business environment remains uncertain due to ongoing economic and geopolitical challenges.
Philips is among the first major European companies to benefit from the US tariff refund programme following legal rulings that required the US government to repay certain import duties. Analysts say the development could provide relief to other multinational companies that were affected by the tariffs.
The company maintained its sales growth forecast for the year while expressing confidence that continued demand for its healthcare technology products, combined with improved financial flexibility, will support its long-term growth strategy.
