US, Iran ‘Getting a Lot Closer’ to Agreement — Trump
Donald Trump says the US and Iran are “getting a lot closer” to an agreement but warns of severe consequences if negotiations fail, as both sides continue high-stakes talks over Middle East tensions.
US President Donald Trump has said the United States and Iran are “getting a lot closer” to reaching an agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Trump made the statement during a phone interview with CBS on Saturday, while also warning that failure to reach a deal could lead to severe consequences.
“If the US and Iran do not come to an agreement, we’re going to have a situation where no country will ever be hit as hard as they’re about to be hit,” he said.
However, in a separate interview with Axios, the US president struck a more cautious tone, describing the chances of a deal as “a solid 50/50.”
He also warned that he would “blow them to kingdom come” if negotiations collapsed, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Iran said on Saturday that it was finalising a 14-point “framework agreement” with the US, though officials noted that significant disagreements still remain between both sides.
The talks come amid heightened diplomatic and military tensions, with both countries seeking to avoid a further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said while in India that “there may be some news a little later today,” though he added uncertainty remains over whether a breakthrough will be reached.
Reports also indicate that Trump is expected to hold discussions with Gulf leaders, as well as meet key negotiators including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside Vice President JD Vance.
Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, has also reportedly been involved in diplomatic efforts this week, attempting to narrow the gap between both sides.
Tensions escalated further after reports suggested the US president had considered new military strikes on Iran as the crisis entered its 13th week.
Trump also drew attention after abruptly cancelling a planned appearance at his son’s wedding, citing “government-related circumstances.”
