US Imposes Sanctions on Sudan Over Chemical Weapons Use

The United States has imposed a new round of sanctions on Sudan, accusing the Sudanese government of using chemical weapons during its ongoing civil war. The sanctions, announced under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act, follow a US determination that Sudan violated international law by deploying chemical weapons in 2024.

According to the US State Department, the additional sanctions include restrictions on US exports to Sudan, limitations on access to US government credit and financial assistance, and tighter controls on technology and other sensitive exports. Washington said the measures will remain in place until Sudan meets the legal conditions required for their removal, including assurances that chemical weapons will no longer be used.

The Sudanese government has rejected the allegations, describing the sanctions as unjustified and politically motivated. Officials in Khartoum insisted that the country has not used chemical weapons and criticised the US for imposing punitive measures without what they described as an independent international investigation into the claims.

The sanctions come amid Sudan's prolonged conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a war that has triggered one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The US said the latest measures are intended to hold those responsible accountable while increasing pressure on the Sudanese authorities to comply with international law.
