The United Kingdom Government has opened applications for the 2026 Chevening Scholarship, offering Nigerians and other eligible candidates the opportunity to pursue a fully funded one-year master's degree at universities across the UK. Applications opened on August 4 and will close on October 6, 2026.
The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, is the British government's flagship international scholarship programme. Established in 1983, it supports outstanding professionals with leadership potential from more than 140 countries and territories to study at eligible UK universities. More than 60,000 people have benefited from the programme worldwide.
Successful applicants will receive full tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, return economy airfare to the UK, arrival and departure allowances, and travel grants for approved Chevening events. The scholarship is designed to equip future leaders with world-class education, professional networks and the skills needed to drive positive change in their home countries.
According to the British High Commission, applicants are expected to demonstrate strong leadership qualities, academic excellence and a commitment to contributing to the development of their communities after completing their studies. Candidates must also meet the programme's eligibility requirements and apply through the official Chevening online portal before the application deadline.
The UK Government encouraged qualified Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that Chevening alumni have gone on to occupy leadership positions in government, business, academia and civil society across the world.
