The frontrunner to become the United Kingdom’s next prime minister, Andy Burnham, was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament on Monday, marking a significant step in his campaign to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party.

The development followed Starmer’s announcement that he would resign as prime minister after less than two years in office amid mounting pressure from within his party and growing public dissatisfaction with his administration.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer delivered an emotional address in which he acknowledged losing the confidence of Labour lawmakers and confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision to step down.

“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” Starmer said.

He also revealed that Labour’s National Executive Committee would oversee the leadership transition, with nominations expected to open on July 9 and close on July 16.

Political observers believe Burnham could become prime minister within weeks if no serious challenger emerges. His position was further strengthened after Health Secretary Wes Streeting publicly endorsed his leadership bid.

Burnham, who previously served as a cabinet minister under former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, has been Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017.

The veteran politician travelled to London by train on Monday before taking his seat in the House of Commons, drawing significant media attention as speculation about his leadership prospects intensified.

Starmer’s resignation follows months of political challenges, including declining approval ratings, policy reversals and disappointing Labour performances in local and regional elections.

Although he returned Labour to power in the 2024 general election after 14 years in opposition, his administration struggled to maintain momentum amid economic pressures and internal party divisions.

Labour lawmakers increasingly viewed Burnham as a stronger figure capable of countering the growing popularity of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, which has gained significant ground in recent opinion polls.

With the leadership contest now underway, Burnham is widely expected to play a central role in shaping Labour’s future direction and the next phase of British politics.
