ABUJA — The United Kingdom government has officially announced the appointment of Mr. Peter Vowles as the new British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to an institutional statement released by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Vowles will succeed the outgoing High Commissioner, Dr. Richard Montgomery CMG. The diplomatic transition is scheduled to take effect in September 2026, when Vowles will formally arrive in Abuja to assume control of the UK's primary diplomatic mission in West Africa.
Vowles brings over two decades of highly specialized diplomatic, governance, and international development experience across Africa and Asia to the position. He is currently completing his tour of duty as the British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, a high-stakes role he has occupied since 2023. His expansive career has seen him alternate between core foreign policy execution and large-scale program delivery, including a previous deployment as Ambassador to Myanmar (Yangon) and a prominent executive stint as the Transformation Director for the FCDO.
