Turkey Detains Over 200 Suspects Linked to ISIS Ahead of NATO Summit
Turkish authorities have detained 209 out of 241 suspects linked to ISIS in Ankara during raids ahead of the NATO summit, as part of heightened national security operations.
Turkish security forces have detained more than 200 individuals suspected of links to the Islamic State group during coordinated raids in the capital Ankara, as the country steps up security ahead of the upcoming NATO summit.
According to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, detention orders were issued for 241 suspects early on Tuesday morning as part of an intelligence-led operation targeting multiple extremist networks. Authorities confirmed that 209 of those named in the warrants were taken into custody during simultaneous raids carried out by police and gendarmerie units, while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The operation focused primarily on individuals alleged to have ties to the Islamic State group, alongside members of other organisations considered security threats. Officials said the raids were conducted across different parts of Ankara under the coordination of counter-terrorism units.
Security measures have been intensified across Turkey in preparation for the NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara on 7–8 July, which is expected to bring together leaders from alliance member states. Authorities have introduced heightened surveillance, movement restrictions in sensitive areas, and increased security deployments around key government and diplomatic locations.
Turkish officials stated that the latest operation forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts to dismantle extremist networks and prevent potential threats to public safety, particularly during major international events.
Investigations are continuing, with authorities indicating that additional arrests may follow as efforts to locate the remaining suspects progress.
