Troops Foil Sokoto Abduction Bid, Govt Dismisses Turji Threat
Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma repelled a bandit attack in Sokoto, while the state government assured residents that security agencies remain prepared to counter threats linked to Bello Turji.
Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have successfully repelled a bandit attack and neutralised several terrorists in Takatsaba, a border community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident occurred on Monday when heavily armed bandits reportedly invaded the community in an attempt to abduct residents. A security source disclosed that troops responded swiftly to distress calls and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
According to the source, the troops overwhelmed the assailants with superior firepower, killing several of them while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
“The troops confronted the bandits with superior firepower, leading to the neutralisation of several of the attackers, while others escaped with gunshot wounds,” the source said.
The operation prevented casualties among residents and protected property in the community. Security operatives also recovered two motorcycles, magazines and assorted ammunition abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.
The source commended the troops for their professionalism and prompt intervention, describing the operation as a major success that averted significant loss of lives and property.
He added that security agencies had intensified proactive operations across border communities and vulnerable farming settlements to curb banditry and other criminal activities.
The military success comes amid growing concerns over reports that notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji has allegedly acquired sophisticated weapons and recruited mercenaries to train members of his criminal network.
Reacting to the reports, the Sokoto State Government reassured residents that adequate measures were in place to address emerging threats.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, said the government was closely monitoring developments and working with security agencies to maintain peace and stability across the state.
“Security is a continuous process, and as a government, we take every intelligence report seriously. We are working closely with security agencies to ensure that criminal elements do not threaten the peace of our state,” Usman stated.
He said Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration had continued to provide logistical and financial support to security agencies through the provision of vehicles, motorcycles, communication equipment and other operational resources.
Usman urged residents not to panic over reports linked to Turji, insisting that security forces remained capable of confronting criminal groups.
He also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information to strengthen ongoing efforts against banditry and insecurity in Sokoto State.
