Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Reviving Horse Racing in Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to reviving horse racing in Nigeria, describing the sport as a platform for cultural preservation, youth empowerment, tourism, economic growth and national unity.
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration's commitment to reviving and developing horse racing in Nigeria, describing the sport as an important tool for promoting national unity, preserving cultural heritage and creating economic opportunities. The President gave the assurance during the Renewed Hope West African Horse Racing Derby held in Kaduna State.
Represented at the event by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, Tinubu said the Federal Government would continue to support initiatives aimed at repositioning horse racing to meet international standards. He noted that the sport aligns with his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda by encouraging youth empowerment, tourism, job creation and regional integration.
The President emphasised that horse racing remains one of Nigeria's oldest sporting traditions and has the potential to contribute significantly to economic development if properly harnessed. He assured stakeholders that the government would work closely with relevant organisations to improve infrastructure, strengthen regulation and expand participation across the country.
Organisers of the derby commended the Federal Government's support, noting that the competition attracted participants from Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries. They explained that plans were underway to expand horse racing beyond its traditional northern base by introducing competitions in other parts of the country in future seasons.
Tinubu further expressed optimism that sustained investment in horse racing would help preserve Nigeria's rich equestrian culture while promoting peace, social cohesion and sporting excellence. He encouraged participants to uphold discipline, fairness and sportsmanship as the country continues efforts to build a globally competitive horse racing industry.
