Three Vigilantes from Same Family Shot Dead in Fresh Plateau Attack

Three members of the same family serving in a local vigilante group were killed after suspected gunmen launched a fresh attack on Sabon-Layi community in Gwol District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State. The victims were reportedly on security patrol when the attackers struck at about 10 p.m., deepening concerns over the recurring violence in the area.

Community sources said the assailants stormed the area under the cover of darkness and specifically targeted the vigilante operatives, who were part of a local security arrangement established to protect residents from frequent attacks. The incident triggered panic among residents, many of whom fled to safety as gunfire echoed through the community.

The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack, describing the killings as a direct assault on the community's efforts to safeguard lives and property. He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The latest attack adds to the growing list of violent incidents in Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly appealed for stronger security presence to curb persistent attacks by armed groups. Residents said the continued killings have disrupted farming and other economic activities while forcing many families to live in fear.

Security agencies have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the attack, while investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible and prevent further violence in the affected communities.
