TCN Boosts Power Supply With Additional 600MW
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced the addition of 600 megawatts to the national grid following the completion of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project in Edo State.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this during the official commissioning of the project on Thursday.
According to Abdulaziz, the project represents a major milestone in the company’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and improve the evacuation of bulk electricity from the Ihovbor Transmission Substation to distribution centres across the country.
He explained that the project involved the strategic connection of the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, creating two new transmission routes with a combined length of 14 kilometres.
The TCN boss noted that the newly completed transmission lines would improve power stability, increase energy delivery capacity and enhance operational flexibility within the national grid.
He added that the project would also support more efficient transmission of electricity generated from power plants connected to the national grid, especially within the southern and central parts of the country.
Abdulaziz said the development aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing drive to modernise the country’s electricity infrastructure and improve power supply to homes, industries and businesses.
The additional 600MW is expected to strengthen electricity distribution to several load centres nationwide while reducing transmission bottlenecks affecting bulk power evacuation.
The TCN has continued to implement transmission expansion projects across different regions as part of efforts to improve grid reliability, support industrial growth and enhance energy access nationwide.
Industry stakeholders have repeatedly stressed the need for sustained investment in transmission infrastructure to match rising electricity generation capacity and improve efficiency across Nigeria’s power value chain.
